Mubai

Description

A wide glass dish on a rounded foot, with a small stainless steel insert at the centre that holds the stick upright.

The dish is 11 cm across — wide enough that the ash falls inside it rather than onto the table, however the stick leans as it burns. When it has finished, tip the ash out and rinse the dish.

Nine holes, three sizes. The insert is drilled with nine holes in three diameters — 1.8 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm — so there is room for more than one stick at a time. Most Japanese sticks sit in the 1.8 or 2 mm holes; thicker hand-rolled and masala sticks use the 3 mm. Anything over 3 mm won't fit — worth measuring yours if you're not sure.

The insert lifts out. It isn't fixed in place. Take it out to clear built-up ash, or to wash it separately.

Size. 11 cm across, 4.4 cm tall (4.3 × 1.7 in).

Clear pressed glass. Plain and uncoloured, so it reads as part of the table rather than an object on it. Hand wash.

Before you light it. Set it on a heat-safe surface, away from anything that can catch. The steel insert gets hot — let it cool before handling. Never leave burning incense unattended.

FAQ

Will my incense sticks fit?
The insert has nine holes in three diameters: 1.8 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm. Most Japanese sticks sit in the 1.8 or 2 mm holes, and thicker hand-rolled or masala sticks use the 3 mm. Anything over 3 mm won't fit, so it's worth measuring yours first.

Can I burn more than one stick at once?
Yes. With nine holes there is room for several, though the scent builds quickly - two is usually plenty in a small room.

Does it come with incense?
No. The holder is sold on its own, so you can use it with the sticks you already burn.

How do I clean it?
Tip the ash out, then rinse the dish by hand. The steel insert lifts out and can be washed separately. Hand wash only.

Can I use it for cones or coils?
It is made for sticks. The insert holds a stick upright and the dish catches the ash; cones and coils burn hotter against whatever they sit on, so we don't recommend it for those.

Other Info

Each ceramic piece may have small natural variations from hand-glazing — part of the character of kiln-fired tea ware.

Clear Hour is the plainest thing Mubai makes - a dish, a foot, and a small steel collar. Nothing about it asks to be looked at, which is rather the point: the only thing moving is the thread of smoke above it.
